Four months after setting a somewhat dubious record by turning down the highest auction bid ever for a horse, Michael Paulson didn't expect history to repeat itself with that colt's decorated dam, Azeri. As the bidding for one of just six fillies to be crowned Horse of the Year topped $4 million on Monday, Paulson thought he had a sale. But then it stopped at $4.4 million, barely falling short of Paulson's minimum reserve price.

The president of Hill 'n' Dale Farms says multiple graded stakes-winning filly Indyanne has been euthanized after breaking an ankle during a race last month. John Sikura announced the horse's death Tuesday. He said in a statement that veterinarians determined it would have been inhumane to continue treatment. The filly fractured a sesamoid in her left front ankle while leading down the stretch of the Grade I La Brea Stakes on Dec. 27 at Santa Anita Park.

Stakes-winning Vestrey Lady went for a session-high $300,000 at Keeneland's January Horses of All Ages Sale, an event whose sales is off significantly from last year. The 6-year-old mare was purchased by Nobuo Tsunoda and consigned by Cara Bloodstock as agent. Vestrey Lady is by Vicar out of the Kris S. mare Episode. Keeneland sold 210 horses during the session for gross sales of $9,145,700, down 66.2 percent from the corresponding session in 2008 when 239 horses brought $27,088,200.

Dave Mahan, a member of the group who owned 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide, has died. He was 61. Mahan, a Watertown caterer and a principal of Sackatoga Stable, died Wednesday in a Waterbury hospital, said Jack Knowlton, Sackatoga's managing partner. The Republican-American of Waterbury reported on its Web site Wednesday that Mahan suffered from a brain tumor and had been hospitalized since Dec. 26.

With one day left in Keeneland's January Horses of All Ages Sale, sales continue to bring about half the price of last year's lot. Keeneland sold 244 horses Friday for $2,050,200, down 45.6 percent from 2008, when 239 horses brought $3,766,400. The average of $8,402 was down 46.7 percent from last year's $15,759. The overall picture took an even bigger hit, with 1,125 horses selling for $31,028,200, down 53.5 percent from last year's 1,145 horses bringing $66,678,700.

Jockey Garrett Gomez won three races Wednesday at Santa Anita, but fell $10,982 shy of breaking Jerry Bailey's season earnings record. Gomez needed a victory in the $76,400 Kalookan Queen Handicap on his fourth and final mount of the day, but Baroness Thatcher finished third, more than five lengths behind winner Lovely Isle.

Delosvientos showed why he's one of the best long-distance runners on dirt, romping to an 11 1/4-length victory in the snow Wednesday in the $84,050 Gallant Fox Handicap at Aqueduct. The 5-year-old gelding won for the fifth time in eight starts in 2008, four coming in races 1 1/2 miles or longer. Jockey Eddie Castro sent Delosvientos right to the front and controlled the pace for the 1 5-8 miles. "He's got such a nice long stride, it felt like he could go around again," Castro said.
