UCL 2009-2010 Quarter-Finals Day Four

15.04.10

7 April 2010

BORDEAUX 1 (Chamakh 45)
LYON 0

Dead ball specialists Bordeaux should have took an early lead through Gourcuff, who broke from the wall and rose high but headed over a Wendel free kick. Diarra hit a sledgehammer of a left foot half volley from 30 yards, the ball bounced violently off the top of the crossbar. Diarra started the move which lead to the goal with a crossfield pass out wide left to Torremolinos, he played a one-two with Jussie before pulling back a centre which Plasil sliced but Chamakh pounced and his shot bounced in off a defender.

Gomis ran clear of the Bordeaux offside trap but having rounded Carasso he took the ball too wide and his shot was easily cleared. Lloris pulled off a fantastic left handed save to prevent Wendel from scoring the goal that would sent Bordeaux into the semi-finals, much to Bayern's delight.

Bordeaux's form has been in the toilet in recent weeks/months. A question of too many games and not enough depth? Two domestic cup competitions cannot help and this will inevitably lead to speculation over Laurent 'Blankety' Blanc's future.

After almost a decade of failed attempts Lyon finally make the last four. Lloris and Pjanic aside this isn't a particularly impressive squad especially in attack - Lisandro and Gomis have scored five goals between them but then Bayern's defence isn't too hot either.

Lyon win 3-2 on aggregate.

Attendance : 32,000
Assist : Plasil

MANCHESTER UNITED 3 (Gibson 3, Nani 7, Nani 41)
BAYERN MUNICH 2 (Olic 43, Robben 74)

The big news was the sudden, dramatic return from injury of Rooney and we have no idea how he effected Bayern's preparations because the idiots on UK TV didn't bother asking Van Gaal or anyone from Bayern that particular question. Rooney had an immediate impact. Rafael shrugged off a challenge from Ribery as he turned onto a ball out of defence and passed infield to Rooney, Rooney knocked the ball forward to Gibson who beat Butt with a low shot just right of centre, a shot you would expect any top class goalkeeper to save. Rooney found Valencia in space with a glorious crossfield pass, Valencia baited Badstuber before firing in a centre the second Nani made a run across a Bayern defender, Nani connected with an outrageous backheel which, to some Bayern fans at least will invoke memories of Porto legend Madjer. Rafael was booked for kicking out at Van Bommel (Beckham-Simeone style) after the Dutchman sneakily tripped him. Rafael wasted a great chance on the break after Van Buyten inadvertently helped on a Gibson pass but with Rooney screaming for the ball at the back post, the young Brazilian fired wide. Shortly after Olic botched a great chance on the break, United added a third. Valencia made the hopeless Demichelis look a complete fool by collecting a throw-in and flicking the ball over his head, Valencia overhit his centre but Nani arrived to slam a left foot shoot into the roof of the net. Muller headed on a Schweinsteiger cross, Carrick slipped when challenging Olic for the ball and the Croat hooked a left foot shot across goal into the bottom right corner. Bayern, who had been anonymous as an attacking threat to that point, suddenly came to life. Robben drifted in from the left, dribbled past three players and drew an excellent save from a poorly positioned Van der Sar.

Rafael pushed then pulled back Ribery as he attempted a ran from the centre circle. Ribery, and several Bayern players, pleaded with the ref for a second yellow card and he duly obliged. Badstuber was lucky he didn't join Rafael in the stands for an appalling, two footed, jumping foul on Valencia. He must have been watching Scholes. As O'Shea was warming up to replace Rooney, Nani failed to punish another mistake by Butt, volleying over his head and over the bar. Nani missed an even better chance to complete his hat-trick when Evra's clever pass sent him clear of a Bayern defence caught flat footed on the half-way line. As he cut in from the left, from an admittedly tight angle, he tired to beat Butt at his near post but the veteran parried the ball out for a corner. Vidic got a block on a Robben shot to force a corner. Unfortunately for United he got nowhere near the Dutchman when defending it. Ribery swung the ball to Robben who was standing free on the edge of the box, not because Bayern had an extra man as erroneously pointed out by the so called experts on Sky and ITV (Man United had more players in and around the box) but because of poor marking, Robben connected with a perfectly struck, perfectly timed volley which bounced low inside VDS' left post. As he had done against Fiorentina, the Dutchman's goal killed the tie stone dead, with no further chances.

Taggart was, as usual, gracious in defeat. On Rafael's dismissal :

"The young boy showed a bit of inexperience, but they got him sent off, everyone sprinted towards the referee - typical Germans."

No hint of irony there, this coming from a team who turned the barracking of referees into an art form in the EPL.

Van Gaal's response :

"I thought England was a country of fair play and I don't think that is fair. I don't share Sir Alex's opinion. Part of being a player is control. Every player must know if you pick up one yellow card, a second one means a sending off. I certainly believe it was a yellow card offence and that is down to the player."

This could be a watershed result for Manchester United. For a club in such a precarious financial position (playing against a club with no debts) the loss in revenue as a result of an 'early' elimination will have a severe impact in the transfer market as they seek to rejuvenate an ageing side. If they fail to win the EPL that problem will only be compounded. In Gibson however they have a ready made replacement for Scholes. While he lacks the ginger twat's range of passing he is a cleaner tackler and has a sledgehammer of a right foot. Bayern will, inevitably, be favourites in their semi-final class against Lyon but a team that has conceded eight goals in four games is going to face a defence that has conceded three in four and the best younger goalkeeper in the World.

The elimination of all EPL clubs should Gabriele Marcotti make a welcome return to ITV's Champions League highlight show. There's no such luck for Sky Sports viewers who will have to endure the expertise of that bitter, sour faced git Graeme Souness and wide boy Jamie Redknapp.

Match is tied 4-4 on aggregate, Bayern win on away goals.

11 April 2010

BOLOGNA 2 (Guana 12, Portanova 16)
LAZIO 3 (Mauri 44, Dias 63, Rocchi 68)

The home side got off to a fantastic start. Biava gave away the ball in his own box with a sloppy clearance, Modesto pulled back a centre and Guana hammered a right foot shot into the top left corner. Four minutes Portanova met Adailton's corner with a bullet header. Mauri was left unmarked in the centre of the box as Lazio attacked down their left, Mauri took a touch to control Kolarov's centre then blasted a left foot shot into the top right corner. Dias headed a Ledesma free kick off the top of the crossbar, Viviano jumped into Stendardo as he headed the rebound towards goal, Raggi's attempted clearance hit Dias in the midriff and bounced into an empty net - the Brazilian's first goal in Serie A. Four minutes later Brocchi backheeled a Zarate centre and Rocchi's miss-hit shot wrong footed Viviano.

JUVENTUS 1 (Chiellini 35)
CAGLIARI 0

Attendance : 22,634
Assist : Amauri

LIVORNO 0
UDINESE 2 (Sanchez 8, Di Natale 35)

Sanchez scored for the second time in a week, having only scored once in the previous 8 months. He pulled down an Isla longball, held off Pieri and his shot took a deflection off the defender over Rubinho. Di Natale tapped in Udinese's second with a textbook counter, he passed out wide to Pepe, ran into the box and converted the midfielder's centre.

Attendance : 2,000
Assists : n/a, Pepe

MILAN 2 (Borriello 47, Borriello 80)
CATANIA 2 (Maxi Lopez 12, Ricchiuti 43)

Red hot Maxi Lopez ran between the wretched Favalli and Thiago Silva onto Ricchiuti pass and angled a low shot wide of Dida. Mascara launched a counter attack after Huntelaar was fouled 25 yards from goal, Ricchiuti passed out wide to Maxi Lopez, by this time Milan had men back in numbers but no one picked up Ricchiuti as he ran into the box and headed in Lopez' cross. Borriello began the comeback with a close range header. Milan were fuming when they were denied another clear penalty, following one not called in the first half, punishment perhaps following new Calciopoli 'revelations'? Borriello equalised via a deflection ten minutes from time after a smart turn in the penalty box.

Leonardo has gained a lot of sympathy following Berlusconi's outspoken comments and while he can point to the desperate lack of quality in the Milan squad for the club's failure in Europe he has no such excuse for draws against Napoli, Lazio and Catania or the recent defeat to Parma.

PALERMO 3 (Pastore 28, Miccoli 39 (Pen), Miccoli 53
CHIEVO 1 (De Paula 18)

De Paula punished mistakes by Nocerino and Goian to give Chievo a shock lead. It didn't take long for a Palermo side that had been knocking on the door from the opening whistle to equalise, Pastore heading in a Liverani free kick. The Argentinean won a late first half penalty. After Miccoli converted he added a second with a typically explosive shot from the edge of the box.

Attendance : 25,917
Assists : n/a, Liverani (fk), Pastore (won pen), Liverani

ROMA 2 (Vucinic 12, Cassetti 27)
ATALANTA 1 (Tiribocchi 53)

Consigli fumbled a Vucinic shot and the ball trickled into the net. Roma's veterans combined to double their advantage. Totti crossed from the right and Cassetti threw himself at the ball to head in his second goal of the season. Riise made an unwelcome return to his Liverpool form with a bizarre and un-necessary interception which took the ball to Tiribocchi who finished with a gentle touch into a corner. Toni came off the bench and played like Euro 2008 Toni. Julio Sergio's excellent block from Tiribocchi ensured Roma didn't pay the price for his wasteful finishing.

Next up for Roma the mother of all Rome derbies against a Lazio side who have won three of their last four games.

Attendance : 53,000
Assists : De Rossi?, Totti, n/a

SIENA 3 (Ghezzal 18, Ghezzal 62, Rosi 66)
BARI 2 (Rivas 13, Castillo 22)

Siena's offside trap gift wrapped the opening goal for Bari. Ghezzal scored a fantastic equaliser. Cutting in from the left he passed to Grosso, Grosso played a first time ball into Larrondo who flicked it up and Ghezzal smashed a volley inside the left post. Siena were only level for four minutes. This time Baretto centred from the left and Castillo scored at the second time of asking. Ghezzal's second was equally as good as his first, capitalising on a slip in defence the Algerian international hit a superb lob up and over Gillet inside the left post. Four minutes later Gillet made a brilliant low save from Del Grosso and fullback Rosi hooked in the rebound.

Attendance : 9,943

NAPOLI 2 (Quagliarella 3, Hamsik 78)
PARMA 3 (Antonelli 63, Lucarelli 68, Jimenez 87)

Quagliarella tapped in a Lavezzi centre. Crespo came on as a half time substitute and made the equaliser with a cutback from the by-line. Lucarelli put Napoli in front with a thumping header from a corner. Quagliarella touched back a Zuniga centre and Hamsik placed a first time shot into the bottom left corner. Quagliarella got a second yellow for dissent and his coach followed him a minute after Jimenez tapped in the winner from a rebound.

Attendance : 30,000

FIORENTINA 2 (Keirrison 11, Kroldrup 82)
INTER 2 (Milito 74, Eto'o 80)

In a brilliant opening 10 minutes Frey was forced to make two saves and Milito headed against a post. Montolivo sold Zanetti with a drag back as the Inter captain ran out of defence, Montolivo released the overlapping Comotto and Keirrison shot first time past Julio Cesar. Inter's equaliser was a carbon copy and they went in front six minutes later after a blistering Sneijder lead counter when defending a Fiorentina corner. Eto'o checked his run as Balotelli made a run out wide, Sneijder passed to Balotelli, he whipped in a low cross and Eto'o jumped in the air and volleyed past Frey. Brilliant goal. Incredibly the lead only last two minutes. Inter conceded a corner, Balotelli's headed clearance hit a Fiorentina defender and Kroldrup smashed the ball in off Zanetti.

Mourinho accused one of the linesman of celebrating a Fiorentina goal. Not sure what he was talking about as Italian TV didn't show anything.

Next up for Inter - Juventus at the San Siro, four days before they face Barcelona in the Champions League.

Attendance : 36,981
Assists : Comotto, Eto'o, Balotelli, n/a

BLACKBURN 0
MANCHESTER UNITED 0

Man United's title hopes took a dent as they were held at Blackburn. Chances were few and far between with United's best opportunity falling to Antonio Valencia who was denied by keeper Paul Robinson after breaking clear.

Attendance : 29,912

LIVERPOOL 0
FULHAM 0

Liverpool hopes of grabbing a European place look increasingly unlikely after falling to see off Fulham at Anfield. Liverpool had by far the better of things but visiting keeper Mark Schwarzer kept them out with decent stops from Ryan Babel and Alberto Aquilani.

MANCHESTER CITY 5 (Tevez 38 Pen, Tevez 40, Adebayor 43, Onuoha 74, Adebayor 88)
BIRMINGHAM 1 (Jerome 42)

Man City consolidated fourth place as they blitzed Birmingham at Eastlands. After a goalless 38 minutes, the game exploded with four goals in a crazy six minute spell. City got the first two as Carlos Tevez sent the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot after Emmanuel Adebayor was bundled over by Scott Dann and then he netted again with the slightest touch onto a thumping goalbound header from Nedum Onouha. Birmingham pulled one back within two minutes when Cameron Jerome was left unmarked to head in James McFadden's cross but they had no time to celebrate as City restored their two goal lead when Adebayor had a tap in from Craig Bellamy's low cross. Having been denied a goal by Tevez earlier, Onouha did find the net himself after the break when he collected a pass from Tevez before tearing through the defence and finding the bottom corner and late on Adebayor added a fifth when he was sent clear by Andy Johnson's long ball.

HULL 1 (Kilbane 3)
BURNLEY 4 (Paterson 35, Alexander 64 Pen, Alexander 70 Pen, Elliott 96 fk)

Burnley won away for the first time this season as they came from behind to beat fellow relegation probables Hull. The hosts took an early lead when Kevin Kilbane headed in Jozy Altidore's cross but by the interval Burnley were level when Tyrone Mears crossed for Martin Paterson to take a touch at the near post, turn and fire across goal and inside the far post. Burnley won it with two penalties in the space of six second half minutes. The first came when a combination of George Boateng and Ibrahima Sonko hauled down Michael Duff, allowing Graham Alexander to score with an unconventional toe poked spot kick into the corner and then David Nugent was fouled by Steven Mouyokolo and Alexander found the top corner with a similar unusual style. Late on, Wade Elliott floated a superb free kick inside the far post from the left edge of the area to wrap things up. Both clubs are four points from safety.

Attendance : 24,369
Assists : Altidore, Mears, Duff (won pen), Nugent (won pen), Thomson (won fk)

EPL Round 8

01.11.09

5 October 2009

ASTON VILLA (Dunne 15)
MANCHESTER CITY 1 (Bellamy 67)

Honours even at Villa Park as two of the Big Four Wannabees went head to head. All the pre-match hype was off Man City's Gareth Barry returning to his former club so it was somewhat ironic that the scoring was opened by a player who went the other way as Richard Dunne out jumped Barry to powerfully head home a corner from James Milner and then decided on a decidedly low key celebration. City levelled after the break when Emmanuel Adebayor squared the ball for Craig Bellamy to sweep in.

Attendance : 37,924
Assists : Warnock (ck), Adebayor

4 October 2009

CHELSEA 2 (Anelka 60, Malouda 91)
LIVERPOOL 0

Chelsea return to top spot after seeing off fellow Big Four contenders Liverpool. The game took a good half an hour to really get started and both clubs could have netted before the break as Nik Anelka. Michael Ballack and Fernando Torres should have done better with headers whilst Albert Reira almost found the net with a 40 yard free kick which Henrique Hilario just tipped away before it crept inside the post. The breakthrough came on the hour as Javier Mascherano lost possession and Chelsea broke as Didier Drogba found space on the left and his excellent cross was finished at the far post by Anelka. Torres could have levelled but bobbled an effort wide before Chelsea wrapped it up in stoppage time as Drogba cut in from the right and crossed for Florent Malouda to bundle in at the near post. Even after that, Liverpool had a chance as Yossi Benayoun showed good control and then dummied to send the keeper down but with the goal gaping, he rolled the ball wide. It summed up Liverpool's day.

Attendance : 41,732
Assists : Drogba, Drogba

ARSENAL 6 (Vermaelen 17, Van Persie 33, Arshavin 37, Fabregas 57, Walcott 75, Bendtner 89)
BLACKBURN 2 (Nzonzi 4, Dunn 30)

Arsenal handed out a statement of intent as they twice came from behind to blitz Blackburn at the Emirates.

Rovers took a surprise lead with a classic route one goal as a long kick forward by keeper Paul Robinson was nodded on by Steven Nzonzi whose looping header caught Vito Mannone slightly off his line and the ball looped over him and in. Arsenal levelled with a beauty as Cesc Fabregas set up Thomas Vermaelen to drill in a superb low drive from 25 yards into the bottom corner, however Rovers regained the lead on the break as Brett Emerton fed the ball wide to David Dunn who cut into the area and as he looked to curl one inside the far post, his effort was deflected past the keeper at the near. The hosts equalised again as Fabregas played Robin Van Persie through in the area and he drilled a shot past Robinson and inside the far post and it was Groundhog Day four minutes later with an almost carbon copy goal as Fabregas found Andrei Arshavin to fire Arsenal ahead at the interval.

After the break, the Fabregas show continued as he finally got onto the scoresheet when he collected an overhead pass from Tomas Rosicky to send a sliced volley into the top corner from the edge of the area, leaving Robinson rooted to the spot. Rovers weren't giving up though as young sub David Hoilett bobbled a shot against the post although a minute later they could have been further behind when Abou Diaby arrowed a shot inches wide. It proved to be a warning as a Rovers attack broke down resulting in Arshavin running from area to area before finding Fabregas whose touch fell nicely into the path of sub Theo Walcott who walloped in the fifth. Nicklas Bendtner and Walcott both came very close to adding a sixth before Bendtner collected a long crossfield pass from Bacary Sagna, cut inside and unleashed a brilliant strike from 25 yards which flew in via the inside of the post.

Assists : Robinson (fk), Fabregas, n/a, Fabregas, Fabregas, Rosicky, Fabregas, Ramsey

EVERTON 1 (Osman 55)
STOKE 1 (Huth 50)

Everton came from behind to earn a point at home to Stoke. The visitors went ahead with a towering header by Robert Huth from Matt Etherington's corner however the home side levelled within five minutes after a good interchange of passes saw Johnny Heitinga find Leon Osman who curled in a beauty off the bar.

Attendance : 36,753
Assists : Etherington (ck), Heitinga

WEST HAM 2 (Cole 16, Hughes 92 og)
FULHAM 2 (Murphy 47 Pen, Gera 57)

West Ham and Fulham continue to struggle this season after an entertaining draw at Upton Park. The Hammers opened the scoring with a near post header from Carlton Cole after Alessandro Diamanti had swung a free kick in and it looked to be going totally in their favour when debutant Kagisho Dikgacoi was sent off for pushing Scott Parker in the face after the pair squared up. Fulham battled back after the break and after Matthew Upson hauled down Diomansy Kamara, Danny Murphy levelled from the penalty spot. Ten minutes later, they took the lead as Zoltan Gera volleyed in Paul Konchesky's corner. West Ham grabbed a point in stoppage time when Junior Stanislas's shot deflected in off of Aaron Hughes but the Hammers were still jeered off by their fans.

BOLTON 2 (Gardner 4, Davies 69)
TOTTENHAM 2 (Kranjcar 34, Corluka 73)

Spurs twice came from behind to earn a draw at Bolton but are still without a win at the Reebok since Bolton's move their 12 years ago. The hosts were ahead early when Chung-Young Lee's shot was saved but Ricardo Gardner netted the rebound. Spurs levelled with a superb low drive from Niko Kranjcar after Peter Crouch had nodded the ball down but Bolton regained the lead after the break when Kevin Davies bravely avoided a defender and a collision with the goalpost to head in Tamir Cohen's cross. Spurs battled back again with Crouch missing a sitter by blasting the ball at the keeper with the goal gaping and it then looped up onto the bar, however minutes later. Krancjar's corner was met by Vedran Corluka to head a rare goal.

Attendance : 21,305
Assists : n/a, Crouch, Cohen, Kranjcar (ck)

BURNLEY 2 (Fletcher 53, Bikey 62)
BIRMINGHAM 1 (Larsson 95 fk)

Burnley remain 100% at home after a comfortable win against Birmingham. The visitors should have gone ahead through Lee Bowyer but, with the goal empty, he managed to play the ball back across goal when it seemed easier to score. Burnley went ahead when Tyrone Mears set up Steven Fletcher to drive into the net although keeper Joe Hart could have done better. They doubled it when Andre Bikey played a neat one-two with David Nugent before walloping in the second. A stoppage time free kick from Sebastien Larsson did little apart from deny the hosts a clean sheet.

Attendance : 20,102
Assists : Mears, Nugent, McFadden (won fk)

HULL 2 (Vennegoor of Hesselink 60, Geovanni 68)
WIGAN 1 (Sinclair 87)

Hull recorded a much needed win against Wigan who continue to blow hot and cold. It took the home side an hour to break through when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink headed in Dean Marney's cross and then Geovanni found the net after a fine run and cross by Kamil Zayatte. Wigan grabbed a late consolation when Scott Sinclair headed in from close range after Jordi Gomez saw hit effort saved.

Attendance : 22,822
Assists : Marney (ck), Zayatte, n/a

MANCHESTER UNITED 2 (Berbatov 51, Ferdinand 94 og)
SUNDERLAND 2 (Bent 7, Jones 58)

Man United needed a stoppage time own goal to deny Sunderland their first win at Old Trafford since 1968 in a game which saw the visitors take the lead twice.

The visitors began very well and confidently and were ahead early when Darren Bent collected a pass from Lee Cattermole on the edge of the area, took a touch to turn and then drilled an instant low drive into the bottom corner of the net. Indeed during the entire first half, United were poor and were jeered off at the interval as misplaced passes and lack of attempts were notably with Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon only needing to deal with a cross from Nemanja Vidic throughout the half.

United brought on Andersen for Paul Scholes at the break and they began the half much better and were level within six minutes when Dimitar Berbatov sent a superb acrobatic volley into the corner from John O'Shea's cross. It came seconds after Wayne Rooney had been denied by Gordon. Remarkably, Sunderland rode the United storm and regained the lead as Andy Reid crossed for Kenwyne Jones to leap and reach the ball ahead of keeper Ben Foster with enough power for it to bobble over the line. Rooney and Danny Wellbeck both came close to levelling it again for United whilst Jones miss-kick in front of goal to blow a glorious chance to make it safe for the visitors. Their cause wasn't helped when Kieran Richardson conceded a free kick for obstruction and then stupidly kicked the ball away to collect a second yellow card and subsequent red. Four minutes of stoppage time started with sub Michael Carrick firing wide and as the pressure increased, the breakthrough arrive as Patrice Evra's shot was heading wide before Anton Ferdinand sliced it into his own net.

Attendance : 75,114
Assists : Cattermole, O'Shea, Reid, n/a
